Conflict in the Amhara Region

Update on the urgent situation

A six month state of emergency has been declared in the Amhara region after conflict broke out at the start of August. This is where our Gondar office, hundreds of our sponsored families and many of our educational projects are based.

Areas in which we work, including Gondar, Bahir Dar and Lalibela have been affected. Media access is limited, and it is difficult to confirm all the facts, but key services such as transport and banking have been interrupted and there is no internet connectivity. Thankfully, we have been able to make contact with our team who are safe. Fighting was ongoing in Gondar since Thursday 3rd of August, it seems a calm was restored by Wednesday 9th, with some key services running by Friday.

The situation is difficult to predict and communication is challenging but our team are doing the best they can to be in contact with, and continue support for, the students and families we support.

These families were already in a difficult economic situation and the conflict has aggravated living conditions, with the cost of food tripling in many cases. Any help you can give would make a big difference. All donations received will be directed to support families to by food and meet immediate needs.

You can also make a donation by bank transfer using the details below.
