A one day course Sports Leadership training for teachers of physical education, was held recently in Bishoftu, organised and sponsored by Link Ethiopia.
A shortage of trained PE specialist teachers, limited equipment and facilities have a negative effect on the quality of physical education in Ethiopia. The training has been designed to offer ideas on different approaches to teaching the subject, and some practical games and activities that the teachers can use to supplement their existing practice.
The training, which was held at Lemlem Tesfa School was attended by 11 PE teachers from 8 different schools in the Bishoftu area and included a variety of theory sessions, and of course, plenty of practical activities focused upon warm up ideas, minor games and circuit fitness training!
The teachers found the training very motivating and felt that the day gave them plenty of new ideas and activities that they could use.
“To tell you frankly, I liked both the practical and the theoretical elements of the day. I feel that the workshop was excellent and will be really useful to me in supporting my teaching.”
“This training was really useful in helping me to decide what to teach, to which groups, when and why. I found this really helpful.”
What happened next?
The training continued further through follow up sessions, to support the implementation of the training. The sessions aimed to encourage the teachers to make best use of the workshop content to suit their own particular needs (rather than to impose any structure or format upon them), and to promote the confidence of the teachers (where this was needed), in their own competence to deliver the practical element of the subject.
Our thanks go to all of the teachers involved and their School Directors, who have supported them in being able to attend this valuable training. Special thanks go to Lemlem Tesfa School for hosting the day and Mike McCarthy for his hard work and dedication to providing effective training for the teachers.
