Dudmegn Elementary School has a new waterstation. Access to clean water is a basic human right, and the basis for a healthy life. Northern Ethiopian climate is dry and hot; many of the children at the school walk for more than an hour in the heat and dust. Thanks to the support of the Mandala Trust the teachers and students of Dudmegn Elementary now have clean running water.
Dudmegn Elementary School is situated down in the town of Woreta which is found along the main road between Bahir Dar and Gondar. Although Gondar and Bahir Dar feature heavily on the tourist trail not many tourists would have ventured to Woreta. 2150 pupils from Grades 1 to 8 are taught in a shift-system where half attend school for four hours in the morning and the other half attend in the afternoon.
Before this intervention Dudmegn Elementary School had only two functioning water taps for its 2150 students. This was clearly not sufficient and the new station allows both teachers and students to stay hydrated, and helps them to concentrate throughout the school day. Check out the gallery below to see the joy that water brings.
