Kelemework School and Dover Grammar School Host a Joint Art Exhibition
Dover Grammar School have been linked with Kelemework School, an urban secondary school in Addis Ababa, since 2008. During this time they have hosted a number of joint art exhibitions.
Dover Grammar sent their work to be displayed alongside work by students from Kelemework at an exhibition attended by local dignitaries including representatives from the local education bureau. Students were given the chance to explain their art work and also introduce the work from Dover Grammar School and the whole event was videoed. A few weeks later both the art from Dover Grammar and Kelemework was sent back to the UK for a similar joint exhibition in the UK.
If you are interested in doing a similar activity in your school you might consider asking students in both schools to complete art work based on a particular shared theme. This theme could be anything from festivals, to local landscapes to more global themes like ‘peace’ or ‘poverty’. Alternatively you might like to use the art scheme of work developed by Stephen Almond of Dover Grammar School which can be found on our website. For younger students, the exchange of pictures can be a particularly effective tool for exploring a topic between schools. This is especially the case when English writing skills have not yet fully developed in either school.
Please let us know if you are considering organising a joint art exhibition and we can support you with the process.
