To continue with the success of Libraries and Literacy project, we can focus on a big event in the Link Ethiopia calendar: the regional Reading Bees. The idea was to emphasise the fun side of reading, to reward hard-working students and to make sure the project finished with a bang.
There were four categories: grades 1-2, grades 3-4, grades 5-6 and grades 7-8. I must say I was bowled over by the contestants’ level of English, of their commitment to their education and their bravery in standing up to read aloud in front of the gathered teachers, fellow contestants and judging panel made up of volunteers and staff. The judges had a hard job deciding between them, awarding their reading fluency, accuracy, expression and their answers to our questions. It was a lovely event that showed us all the value of this project and strengthened our commitment to quality education and facilities for Ethiopian students.
This project was made possible by a grant from the Waterloo Foundation and by fundraising from the following link schools: Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Primary, Seaside Primary, Springwell Community, Whiteheath Infant and Nursery, Linton Park, Haddenham Junior, Dr Challoner’s Grammar, Magdalen College School and Sincil Sports College. Corvallis Sister Cities Association and Jolly Phonics also contributed towards the project, as did our child sponsors. A big thank you to all of you who donated and to all the Link Ethiopia staff and volunteers who made it such a success…
