We are pleased to announce that our first school-wide Reading Bee contest, which is part of our library and literacy project, in the Gondar region was extremely successful. The contest, which was held at Rekebneha School, attracted a good crowd from the community, including parents, teachers and fellow students. The contest consisted of spelling, pronunciation and writing of English words, the students did very well and congratulations to all of them for their fantastic efforts.
The first round consisted of students from grade 4-7 at Rekebneha School competing against each other to secure a place in the next stage where 4 students from each class will be battling against students from another school.
At the end of each competition the students are rewarded with a story book. The contest is a great way to promote reading and writing to the students and provide them with the encouragement to succeed.
In the evening another Reading Bee was held for the younger children at Kebele 03 Elementary School. Students aged between 5 and 6 years were aided with their spelling and pronunciation of English letters.
With the first round successfully completed we are excited to hear about the progression of the contest. A big thank you to Matthew, Elsa and Gebre in Ethiopia for all their help organising and running the competition.
