Our match funded Christmas Campaign this year ran from Tuesday 2nd to 9th December, raising more than £11,000. The money raised will build safe, gender-separated toilets and handwashing stations at Delo Primary School in Ethiopia. The school currently has no functioning toilets, so our project will deliver health, dignity and better attendance for 563 children who currently lack decent sanitation. Targeted sessions providing reusable period packs and training on menstrual health have a significant impact empowring girls in rural schools. Practical Support The initiative, funded by Q3 Strategy, reached girls aged 13-16 at an elementary school in Oromia, ensuring that 50 students received reusable sanitary pads that will last them for at least two years. This is where our Gondar office, hundreds of our sponsored families and many of our educational projects are based.  Areas in which we work, including Gondar, Bahir Dar and Lalibela have been affected. - [Chenna School Reconstruction](https://twlethiopia.org/blog/2023/08/03/chenna-school-reconstruction/): Rebuilding Classrooms after Conflict Chenna Primary School in Debark was occupied by rebel forces during the conflict in northern Ethiopia in 2021. When they withdrew, five classrooms had been destroyed and the furniture burnt. Our construction project aimed to rebuild the classrooms and restore the facilities, so that children could go back to school and begin to recover from the trauma of occupation. In August 2021, the town was occupied by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces, residents faced crop destruction and a shut down of government services. Local families also had no access to water, electricity or a functioning mobile phone service until December 2021 when TPLF forces finally withdrew. Together We Learn has been partnering with Jolly Phonics to train Ethiopian teachers to use the phonics method of teaching English. Instead of memorising words, children are taught the 42 sounds of English, which include the 26 alphabet sounds plus sounds such as ‘ch’ ‘sh’ ‘ee’ and ‘ay’. Teaching children these sounds allows them to start reading quickly by sounding out written words. The library is located in Hibret Elementary School, one of the largest in Gondar, which has 1,070 pupils. Before we began construction the school had only one small room for storing books. Over the last academic year we have been working with grade one teachers in nine schools to teach English using the phonics method.
